Scientists Create Schizophrenic Mice

Scientists have genetically engineered mice that have both the physical and psychological characteristics of schizophrenia.

These scientists claim the creation of schizophrenic mice will help improve our understanding of schizophrenia and will help them to create drugs to treat it.

Web MD states the symptoms of Schizophrenia are the following:

  • Social withdrawal
  • Depersonalization (intense anxiety and a feeling of being unreal)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Loss of hygiene
  • Delusions
  • Hallucinations (eg, hearing things not actually present)
  • The sense of being controlled by outside forces

Scientists reconcile these human symptoms of schizophrenia with those of the genetically modified mice which “showed increased agitation in open spaces and had more trouble finding hidden food than healthy mice and less interest in swimming.”

Amazingly scientists can’t tell the difference between an angry mentally retarded mouse and schizophrenia.

Then again, maybe the mice refuse to eat because they’re afraid the cheese is trying to kill them and they’re afraid of open spaces because they think that being set loose after a lifetime in a cage is just a trick and some twisted scientist is just trying to make them crazy.
