Royal Air Force Scrambled to Intercept Russian Bombers Headed for UK

Royal Air Force fighter jets were scrambled to intercept two Russian bombers heading for British airspace. This comes days after Vladimir Putin threatened Britain with revenge for their ousting of Russian diplomats over Russia’s refusal to extradite Andrei Lugovoy, the main suspect in the murder of former Russian spy, Litvinenko.

Two Tornado fighters, part of the Royal Air Force, or the RAF’s Quick Reaction Alert, took off from an RAF base in Yorkshire, to intercept the Russian aircraft, after they were shadowed by two Royal Norwegian Air Force F16s.

“The Russian bombers turned back before they reached British airspace,” an RAF spokesman said.
